The History of OCM
India - the Jewel in the OCM Crown
While starting out as the dominant manufacturers in Persia and Turkey, it was OCM's revival of India as a major Oriental carpet origin that first provided the company with the volume of merchandise and control over designs and colors upon which its success in the Western markets depended.
By encouraging a native craft that had begun under the Mughal Emperors of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, and combining this inherent artistry of the weavers of Uttar Pradesh and Rajahstan with modern production methods and appropriate technology, OCM (through its associates E. Hill & Co.) turned India into the world's single largest source of handmade oriental carpets.

While it was OCM's Persian and Turkish carpets that enjoyed the greatest popularity in the Old World of Britain and Europe , it was the far larger output of these exclusively designed Indian items, and subsequently the company's huge Chinese production, which served to gain them market leadership in Canada and the USA.
